Organic Coffee Scrub

Having sensitive yet dry skin, I’m always on the lookout for gentle body and/or facial scrubs. On a recent shopping trip to Target I found an awesome coffee ground-based body scrub made by a company called Bean Body. I can’t say I’m a huge coffee fan, in regards to the drink, but man do I LOVE the smell of it. Between fantasizing about smelling like coffee and knowing that coffee scrubs are the “it product” right now, I decided to try it out. I’m usually not a tough sell when it comes to trying something new from Target’s beauty section 😉 .

The Bean Body Coffee Scrub hails from the UK and retails for $16.99 USD, which isn’t too bad considering you get quite a bit of product, 220g (just shy of 8 oz). They have multiple scents available, including coconut, vanilla, mandarin & peppermint however I decided to try coco berry.

What Are Coffee Scrubs?

If you’re unfamiliar with what coffee scrubs are, they’re basically exfoliating body scrubs made out of coffee grounds. The main objective of a body scrub is to exfoliate, of course, but the coffee grounds provide an additional benefit, caffeine. Caffeine can help firm skin and reduce cellulite. According the label on the product, this scrub claims to improve dry skin, stretch marks, cellulite & skin imperfections.

The Packaging

The product comes in a waterproof pouch with a clean, modern look. The pouch is easy to stand upright or tuck away in storage, depending on your preference. The only complaint I have with the packaging is that dispensing a handful of the product isn’t super easy in pouch format. I’m usually already pretty wet when I open the pouch, so some moisture and water gets in and makes the grounds a bit soggy, resulting in me having to leave the opened package out to dry after my shower.

The Ingredients

The formula of the scrub is organic as well as vegan, and includes ingredients such as roasted coffee grounds, coconut oil, vitamin e, cacao, demerara raw sugar, Himalayan salt, Almond Oil, Jojoba Seed Oil & Hyaluronic Acid.

First Time Use

The same day I bought the scrub I ripped it open and took it in the tub with me. BIG MISTAKE!. After my bath there were grounds EVERYWHERE. I had to deep clean my tub, which was fine as it needed it, but after that experience I know to only use the scrub in the shower from here on out. I have a standalone tub that doesn’t have an adjustable faucet, which means lots of scrubbing to get the grounds out!

The packaging is a little tricky to work with if your hands are already wet. Since it’s in a bag you can’t really reach in and grab some grounds, I just dumped a little bit in the my hand. After that I just wetted them a bit and scrubbed away (circular motions all over legs, booty, tummy & arms). Technically you’re supposed to let it sit for a few minutes but since I was in the tub and not about to attempt some crazy gymnastic move to avoid the water or stand up and get cold, I pretty much rinsed off right away.

Final Thoughts

Besides the sheer mess in the tub, I was pretty satisfied with how silky & smooth my skin felt afterwards. I could also tell that a light layer of film was left on my skin, nothing greasy or gross – just moisturizing. The coffee scent doesn’t really last after you’re done, which is no biggie – I just really wanted to smell like coffee.

The only negatives I have to say about the product are that it’s messy and that shaving the next day seemed a little bit harder because of the layer the product left on my skin (likely from the coconut oil). It still worked, just didn’t seem to get as close of a shave.

Overall, the scrub is pretty awesome. It’s not something that I would use every day, but most exfoliating products are recommended 1-2 a week anyways. I can’t say with any certainty how well it helps stretch marks and cellulite, as I’m young enough to not really have a lot of that YET, but I wouldn’t doubt that with long term use the appearance may lessen as the product does do a pretty deep exfoliation. My skin did feel a tad tighter after use.

Pros & Cons

– Organic, Non-GMO & Vegan
– Great for Pedicures

Cons:

– Shower Use Only, No Tub

FYI

Bean Body also makes a scrub specifically for men (not sure why they couldn’t use the regular ones, but you know, it’s all about marketing and target audience). They also make a facial exfoliator and body balm, however I only found the scrub at Target – not sure if they carry the other items. You can peep the Bean Body website here.
